Gallery Logo Contest!!

Gallery needs a new logo, and we want your help!

We want something catchy and fun, but clean and uncluttered. We would like the design to clearly convey what Gallery is all about.

Grand Prize:

$200 US cash prize, and the pride of having your logo selected!
Runner-up Prize:
    $50 US cash prize.
The contest deadline is Sunday October 26, 2003. When the deadline closes, we'll post all of the entries for comment from Gallery users. After a week or two, the Gallery developers will determine the winner, and unveil the results where else, but in a Gallery!

Read on for the contest rules and details...

Contest Rules:
  • Anyone can enter!
  • You are welcome to submit more than one entry, but each entry should be separate.
  • The design cannot contain any copyrighted material without written approval from the owner. That means no stealing copyrighted images, fonts, or other people's work.
  • All submitted images will become the property of the Gallery project, but your authorship recognition will be retained.
  • If you've submitted a logo to us before, you're welcome to submit that for the contest.
  • The logo must contain the text "Gallery". If you like, you can add our motto "Your photos on your website".
  • It should be legible at large and small sizes.
  • It should look good against light and dark backgrounds (or have separate versions for each).
  • When we ship Gallery 2, we'll want to tack a "2" onto the name, so it should be easy to add.
  • Your logo must be created in a vector (not raster) image format, and you must submit an SVG (scalable vector graphics) format of your logo. If for some reason you can't create an SVG, please submit another common vector image format (e.g. EPS or Adobe Illustrator).
  • You are also encouraged to create smaller versions of your logo in PNG format, as well as versions for "Donate to Gallery" and "Powered by Gallery" buttons, as well as anything else that occurs to you. Common sizes include 88x31 pixels, and 80x15 pixels ("blog size"), but don't limit yourself to just that.

The submission deadline is Sunday, October 26, 2003.
Please send all images for one entry, and any title or name you want to give to your design, along with your name, contact information, and a short few-sentence blurb about you to:

You can also direct any further contest questions to this address.

Good luck and get drawing!!

Hello and thanks for keeping your code open source. Some questions about the logo contest:

1. I want to contribute my design/s to Bharat though what would keep others from using it or a derivative of it? Any reassurances?
2. If I submit several designs, only the one you use will I release the license to. O.K.
3. Will you ever resell the logo to another person or organization? Any reassurances?

I hope to submit something soon for your review. In the meantime take a look at my design work at www.whatsthebigidea.com. Thanks again Bharat and Gallery's contributors :)

Hi David.

1) All submitted logo designs will become property of the Gallery project. Right now, that means Bharat Mediratta will retain copyright over the image, although your authorship and design credit will be retained (that's our personal written guarantee). The winning logo will likely be distributed to Gallery users... we will encourage people to use the logo and its variants on their galleries to link back to our website. Any other use will be prohibited without explicit written consent from the Gallery project (i.e. Bharat). We'll be willing to enforce that should the need arise.

2) We would like to display <b>all</b> of the entries to the public. To that extent, we need to have permission to display all designs (winning and non-winning) at that location, and reserve the right to use <b>any</b> of the submitted designs elsewhere (but we're all reasonable people here). In the unlikely event that there are no designs we want to use, we will most likely extend the contest deadline to allow for more submissions.

3) The Gallery project will not sell any logo to any other person or organization. If someone wants to, say, print t-shirts with any of the logos, we will reserve the right to grant permission on a case-by-case basis, but it's likely that unless we're going to be the ones purchasing such items (e.g. to sell from this website), it's unlikely that any such permission will be granted.

The logo design contributions are much like the software contributions that our developers make to the Gallery project. The code is "given to" the project, rather than "purchased by" the project. The same applies here for the logo designs, except that we're offering a prize for the person who creates the logo we decide to use, and recognition to each artist who submits *any* logo design.

Please ask if you have more questions... we want to make the rules as clear as possible.

1) Can you / would you like to describe further _why_ you want a new logo and/or what's wrong with the current one from YPOV?

2) Any further definitions of the logo size (more specifically than 'large' and 'small' sizes) available or desirably needed?

Not that I'm really think I could make a good logo at all ;) However... Setting some horizon may help building a view

Anyway, Thank you for Gallery!
Regards
Stefan

1) Well, we want a fresh look. Gallery has changed significantly recently, and Gallery 2 is coming up. The logo on this site (the whole site design is by Tony Mayer of <a href="http://www.tonicmedia.co.uk/">Tonic Media</a>) works well for the website, but isn't quite what we want for the official Gallery logo. As mentioned in the contest description, we're looking for a design that reflects what Gallery is all about (whatever that might be!).

2) Well any size. We ask for a vector format design because it's scalable to any size. See the "donate to Gallery" button on the left column of this page? Well that's a "small" size. The banner at the top of the page would be a "large" size. Your design should work well at both extremes.

Hope that sheds a little more light!

Hmn! Can you explain how Gallery has changed (maybe just the hierarchy)?

I worked closely with Bharat for a few months developing the Gallery logo and theme, both of which were created from his thoughts and wishes - especially the logo. Many changes were made until he was happy with the finished design (well so I thought).

I got envolved with this project as I felt I could give something back as I use Gallery in sites I have designed. As far as I can tell the finished design was well received by the users.

Now, I understand that all things move on, and the development of Gallery is going from strength to strength, and if the design that I created (based on Bharats wishes) isn't right anymore, fair enough. However a quick email to me to let me know that you were looking at changing the design would have been nice (YES I know you don't have to but I did work hard on the design and would of expected a quick note, even if you didn't want me to be involved).

I'm sure that this competition will generate the logo and the look that you are after, there are many very talented people around.

Anyway - that's my 2 pennies worth (2 cents) - I guess I will think twice about getting involved in any other projects/teams.

Good luck with Gallery 1 (2) - it's a fantastic piece of software, in my opinion, one of the BEST! I will still use it - no matter what it looks like!! :o)

Hey Tony. Please accept my sincere apologies -- it's my fault that you weren't contacted directly when we started this competition.

The new logo is actually not for the website, per se. It's actually something that we want to embed into the products (G1, G2, GR, etc) to create an identity package. The work that you did on the website is terrific and was very well received, but now that Gallery 2 is approaching completion I felt that the website logo was part of the larger website package and it didn't quite feel right to separate it out and embed it in the product that we ship.

I mentioned to Beckett that it would be nice to have a new logo that represented the product in a very succinct manner and also would be a fresh new look to herald the launch of G2. Beckett, being the efficient guy that he is, ran with the ball and set everything up. In my haste, it completely slipped my mind to tell him to contact you directly and he had no way of knowing the work that we did on this together.

I think it's clear to people who use this website (and NukedGallery.net) that your work is excellent. I would love it if you'd a) contribute a logo to the contest and be eligible for the $200 prize and b) work with us to create an entire identity package that we can present with the product and use as the basis for the next website redesign.

So in short, I blew it! Sorry! I hope that you'll stick with us and help us to keep it looking great.

-Bharat

Just wondering when will the final decision be made for the new logo? and when will it be announced?

Good luck to everyone who submitted to the contest!!
