I've tried in the past to upgrade to 2 or 3 without complete success so I've been on gallery 1.6 for years. Now my host has upgraded PHP to 5.4 and all I have is a white screen. How in the world can I accomplish this? I'd like to save my gallery files at the very least with some sort of order.

Can you install G2 or G3?
Either way you don't upgrade, you install G2 or G3 and use the import process.
I don't know if the G1 need to be operational for this work or not.

What step?
If your G1 is broken then I guess you can skip those pre steps other than the backup.

I had some good success today installing G3 and then running the g1_import module. All 20,000 files appear to have been imported. I have some questions, I did search, but no luck.
The next problem, and I'm sure it's been covered ad nauseum, is how to deal with the new file locations. In G1, all the albums were in one master album, now there are sub albums.
OLD: http://website.com/gallery/albums/album603/xyz.jpg
NEW: http://website.com/gallery3/var/albums/album04/album603/xyz.jpg
I have a blog where all the file locations will break if I remove the old gallery/file locations. Is it possible to configure G3 to use the old file locations?
Another question is I can organize the album by upload date and that will fix the order of pics. But when adding new pics I want them to be at the beginning of the album, not the end. I don't see an "Add pictures to beginning of album" option anywhere.

I have never used the G1 import module so can only suggest points #7-9

And some discuttion (2 posts): http://galleryproject.org/forum_module_g1_import#comment-398676
As for sorting, you can have different sort orders in the album. So you can choose assending or decending by upload date.
