I am logged in as admin (at least that's what I think, and also my login name is admin).

But when I try to click Update Now in
Some of your modules are out of date. Upgrade now!

I get:
"Who are you?
You're not logged in as an administrator, so we have to verify you to make sure it's ok for you to do an upgrade. To prove you can run an upgrade, create a file called SOMELONGNUMBER in your gallery3/var/tmp directory."

How do I check whether I am the admin, and/or change my role to admin? There's no such info on the users/groups tab.

Did you make a changes or upgrade some modules or gallery core files? That should not show if you made no changes.

Logging out and logging back in should do the trick.

Nope. Didn't make any changes.

Logging out and back in doesn't help.

The upgrade code and text just does not "show up" unless there was a change.
Since you opened 5 questions about that same time I can assume that they are all related.
I'm not admin?
Thumbnails not being used in new album
G3 can't find ImageMagick
Can't upgrade!
Uploading photos - Unable to process this photo
Did your host make a change that caused this? Do you or they have a backup of since before that this happened that you or they can restore?
Can you install a test install in a different directory that uses a different DB so we can rule out a few things?

The change is basically in the web server. We were on Apache, that's replaced with nginx. It's not really reversible in that there are other scripts that depend on nginx.

Additionally, we have Varnish installed for caching now (didn't have it on Apache)

Issue in this OP is resolved, and I'm facing a different one: Can't upgrade!
