i'm wondering if there's a way for gallery to import photos into it's database without actually copying the files. i would also like it to be able to sync from this directory. the idea is that i have a file server and prefer to mount it to upload photos instead of using the gallery web interface. any ideas?

Using the server add method you can "Use Symlink" instead of copying files. And you could probably mount a separate drive and add as a legal server-add directory.
Automatic sync is not built-in, but try searching these forums for it as others have made attempts.

ooh i didn't see that. sounds like it would do the trick. but what happens if i add files to the photo directory and want those to be added to gallery as well? if i do a server-add with symlink (manual - not auto-sync) will it suck them all in again with duplicates or be smarter? big thanks for the feedback of course.

it works as expected. adding files/dirs as symlinks is just what i want. but if you add the same item again, you get a duplicate. since i want to be able to add lots of files via ftp or an nfs/smb mount to an existing directory, i'd have a problem with duplicate files if i re-imported a whole dir. the workaround is to delete the album and re-import it. i can limit that to directories i know have changed. it's not terrible but if anyone has a better idea let me know.
