Adding many files from server crashes my server

If I try and add a directory from my server (Ubuntu) it will crash around 200 pictures. By crash I mean the exception is large enough to shut down the machine. uploading in batches around 100 seems fine but even then it happens. I have tried graphicsmagick and imagemagick and they both cause the issue. This same problem only every happened in g2 when I threw thousands of photos at it. Any ideas of where to even start troubleshooting this?

log files should give a clue.
