It is not a required field looking at the code.
You can edit it for clarity:
find in gallery3/modules/register/controllers/register.php

$group->input(
      ->rules("valid_url");

change to:

$group->input(
      ->rules("valid_url");

This appears to work when posting with HTML, of course only us moderators can do that. Is it tripping up on the $group->input part? 
$group->input(
      ->rules("valid_url");
