Host Images on external Site

Is it possible to add photos to Gallery without it copying them to Server?

I have reached the storage limit of my webspace where Gallery is Hosted and additional storage is expensive, so I would like to store my photos on a free/cheap storage site (e.g. Skydrive etc) which can provide URL links directly to the item, allowing it to be embedded in an external webpage?

If this isn't possible in G2 is it likely to be on the roadmap for G3?

After 7 years I'm loathed to the depart from Gallery as nothing else comes close, but the hosting costs add up especially when free webstorage is now readily available.

Thanks for the speedy response suprsidr. Whilst LinkItem certainly provides a link to the external image, I unfortunately don't have X Server access so I won't be able to generate thumbnails, which ruins the experience.

Any other suggestions?

No version of Gallery is designed to do this. There are people who have used services like S3 to mount extra space remotely and have the photos hosted there. It's slower, and the price doesn't always pan out. You also need to have root access to the server that's hosting your site to be able to mount the remote storage or find a host that has that service integrated.

There's also a lot of people hosting their hobby site at home off of their cable/dsl connection using dynamic dns services where they want to share everything with their friends and family but have out grown shared hosting.

To be honest if this is a hobby site (not making money of of the site or it's not for your business) and you're using shared hosting plans you've got to be realistic about what you can and can't host on your site. You're not going to be able to share everything with the world on any shared hosting plans. There is absolutely no such thing as "unlimited" anything.

A pro Flickr account is $25 per year and their class of service will blow any "unlimited" shared host out of the water. I still don't care for Flickr's "unlimited" advertising as I'm sure you could hit some limit at some point (try uploading 50TB of photos....)
