Search module returns the homepage of the wordpress site integrated with WPG2 but advanced search option works - please help

Hi I am having a very frustrating problem with the search module of my Gallery2 installation which is integrated with a wordpress main site using WPG2. (Version details at bottom of post) The problem is that the search module only returns the homepage of the wordpress site. However the advanced search option returns results on the same search term correctly. I cannot figure this out at all. I have had a look through the forums but can't find a similar problem reported anywhere. I would most appreciate any help!! I have turned debug on but that is not reporting any errors.
