You mean browse the directories directly? You shouldn't set Gallery up that way.
If you mean you want friendly names in the URL, check out the URL Rewrite plugin: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:rewrite

Thank you for your reply.
I have a genealogical tree on my Joomla web site. It spans 16 families related to my own family. I would like to link my program to specific sub-albums of the gallery.
Several years ago, in another server, I had this set up with Gallery, there was a "tree" of directories in my site and the link had to point to the right directory to achieve this. It had directories for medium, full size and thumbnails.
This Gallery appears much more complicate. Any link I have tried lead to the login screen. I don't want a Gallery tied to the Internet, I just want it to display pictures in the same server when called by a program in that server.

Gallery's main intent is to display photos on a website. Not really be a back end for something else. If you don't want to see the login page every time you try to view a photo, make sure that the permissions are set so that guests can view the photos.
You may want to take a look at the formatted urls plugin so you can get the proper links to the photos too: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:geturls

Thank you very much for your interest.
You are right, Gallery 2 is not what I was looking for. I installed Gallery 1 which is the one I used originally. With Joomla href links and albums set to public I can browse the Gallery from my family site.
As I mentioned before, in my web site each of the 16 families have their own pictures and documents. I still have not found the way to link them directly to their respective albums.
