security error permissions login page

Hello,

When a user goes to access his/her Gallery http://my.gallery.com/, I want them to be presented with the login page. I can make this happen by going to permissions in root Gallery and removingin the [core] View Item permission on the Everybody account.

The problem is when I do this, the users get a Security Violation Error when they try to log in an consequently can not access their gallery

The users [core] view Items remains set in the individual user gallery permissions.

I really dont have any use for the root Gallery other than to add customer gallery albums.

the Requirement is that users be presented with the login page and after they login, they have view Items permission of thier gallery only.
