'could not create var/database.php' on installation

When attempting to install Gallery 3, it gives the following error message

'could not create var/database.php'

Any ideas as to why that may be? The error message really doesn't offer much detail.

Looking forward to trying Gallery 3 out, so hope this isn't a big issue.

there must be a var/ subfolder in your gallery3/ folder, and it must be readable, executable and writeable by the webserver.
if there's already a gallery3/var/database.php file, it must be readable and writeable by the webserver.

If it is not there; create the directory, using your hosts control panel or FTP client. Then give it proper permissions.
