We are a small company and part of our job involves documenting things – this includes taking before and after pictures of things.

For example – if something needs to get fixed – we need to take pictures of what needs to be fixed – then once its resolved – we need to take more pictures.

We need to have notes for pictures and for the groups – so we can search through them. – and identify groups by date/name/notes

The database would be LOCAL – not on the internet. And only for employees on our private LAN.

Is this something Gallery can do? Has anybody used it with this many pictures? What kind of a computer is recommended to handle a database this large? (cpu/ram?) with gallery?

Gallery can handle it. Question is can your hardware, which is next to impossible for us to answer because we don't know anything about your setup, expected load, etc.? Best bet is to install Gallery, load up a few dozen images and albums with comments and perform some load testing.

I believe this post here links to nearly everything I've ran across about performance and G2.

There's probably some more information in the forums if you search.

You should also take a look at G3. It's performance is going to be better than G2 and you won't have the overhead of extra cache files for G2. But it may really depend on how you need/want to setup permissions as well.

It really depends on what you're planning on doing with it. G2, right now, has more plugins and themes available for it and G3 is still in development and changes are being made often.

Investigate both options and see which fits best for you.
