Didn't change anything but can no longer log in and can't reset password

Gallery v1.4.2 I haven't made any changes to my gallery, but starting yesterday no one can log in and I can't reset the password. I've been using Gallery for six years and I'm happy with the way it works -- I just want it to keep working. (Especially the weekend everyone in my family is scheduled to upload their photos so I can make this year's family photo calendar.) I think now that there are other options (Flickr, Picassa, etc.) I should switch to a photo sharing service that doesn't need administration, but I would really like to get through this calendar-making (and holiday) season on Gallery before finding another solution. Security is not an issue for me if there's a workaround to set/reset the password. |

I uploaded the file, but when I navigate to my setup folder I get an error:

I renamed my .htaccess file, so now instead of the server error, when I try to access gallery/setup/ I'm being redirected to gallery/albums.php

Do you have any other .htaccess files doing any redirection? When I try to access your resetadmin file directly, I get a 302 code which means it's getting redirected. Heck even when I try to enter a bad file name that should generate a 404 under your setup directory I still get a 302.
You've got something on your server redirecting access to /setup.

Whatever it is is part of the gallery. I'm trying to remember/find how I'm supposed to get into "safe" mode so the files that need to be updated can be updated. I haven't had to mess with gallery for years, so my memory is rusty.

That's just a template file and it's not doing anything about accessing setup.
I'm not sure what you mean by "safe" mode, other than maybe this:

You might need to run the configure.sh script if you have SSH access.

I tried SSH remote login but it timed out. I don't think I have SSH access. When I first installed Gallery I had to run/change something (not through SSH) whenever I wanted to change the configuration. I can't remember what that was. I don't think the documentation for my version is available any more. I'm just not sure why it stopped working when I wasn't upgrading or changing anything, unless there were too many attempts to login with the wrong password.

You can only run those secure.sh and configure.sh scripts through SSH.
Are you sure you don't have either an index.php in your /setup directory or an .htaccess somewhere above your /setup directory that's doing a redirect?

I'm not seeing much. I renamed the .htaccess back to .htaccess and when I access your /setup directory I get the same error you were getting. Do you have access to the server's error logs, not the access logs, but the error logs?
If you're not sure what those are, contact your host. We need to see what error is actually being thrown to figure this out.

I changed permissions on setup to 755 and can access your setup now. You should be all set to reset your admin password now.

I think I got it solved. Switched from example.org to www.example.org and was able to get logged in.
