[Permalink & URL_rewrite / Carbon] Updating existing Permalinks

Hi guys,

I have a problem related to PermaLinks and URL_rewrite - i hope it hasn't been dealt with before, as i've searched the forums but failed to find anything relevant...

The problem is that initially i enabled mod_rewrite and Permalinks. In the respective field in the config of URL_rewrite, the rule was the default one : f/%filename

Hence my permalinks were working like www.mysite.com/f/permalink

I have few albums uploaded with the old settings. Now i want to remove that /f/ (so i can have www.mysite.com/permalink), however i don;t know how. I've tried updating the rule in URL_rewrite config, i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both URL_rewrite and Permalinks modules, i've tried emptying the DB and template cache, however i still get the following error :

I've read it and done some tests - if my understanding is correct, for this scenario :

the album pics are in "mydir"
permalink "abc" was created for the album

then the pics will be available at www.mysite.com/mydir, and there's no way i can have www.mysite.com/abc, but only www.mysite.com/prefix/abc

where prefix can be any letter/string. Is this correct or am I missing smth ?
