I've read the G1-G2 comparison... but which implications does the metadata handling have in reality? The G1 adds the data to the page, which is good, but the G2 keeps it in the database, right? Does that mean the search engines will have problems finding image if I use G2?

No. The data is stored on the database but is still displayed as HTML.

So where is it important to add the data? In the caption, summary, description? I was only planning to have a caption... will this be sufficient?
I would also - at a later state - want to map the artists according to location. Is there a function like this? How would this be integrated with Google Maps?

I am so SEO expert. There is a few posts about that here. Search for them.
I do know that the title should be meaningful, in other works don't use the name that came from the camera DSC_00238.JPG for example.

@Map: yes there is a Map module for G2.
