I started with Gd as the high priority graphics toolkit and all large images (>~2.5KB 12M pixel) were not created. Changed priorities to favor ImageMagick and most are now created but some are not. Nothing peculiar about the files. The 640x480 images are created OK. Any ideas about why these few thumbnails are broken?
For example: 3 broken in this small album: http://www.jenningsweb.us/Gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3732
Thanks for your help.

If ImageMagick works (see Site Admin > ImageMagick, click Test Settings), then just uninstall GD and NetPBM and rebuild your images (Site Admin > Maintenance)

Thanks for your suggestion. ImageMagick certainly works. It passes all the tests. What I'm not sure how to do is uninstall GD and NetPBM. Does that mean simply remove the paths to these programs that are in the Site Maintenance section? Actually, I notice that GD is actually built into PHP. I am on a hosted Linux system, so cannot do anything to physically remove these from the server. ImageMagick is already the highest priority.
I have the JPEG quality set to 85. Can that be causing any problem?
Thanks,

No.
Please go to site admin -> plugins, then unistall the plugins.
GD is used for poor hosts that don't have other toolkits available. It is resource intensive and causes issues.
You might want to bump that up.
FAQ: PHP memory_limit - Why do I get the error Allowed memory size of Xxx bytes exhausted?
With only a few items/users/albums...I would consider starting over with a more recent version that does not have security issues. G2.3 is the most recent version.

Floridave: Thanks for the info and suggestions. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about the PHP memory limit nor the Gallery version. I'm on a hosted server (Dot5Hosting.com) that restricts such things.
I'll definitely do the uninstalls.
I have only migrated a few of my G1 albums to G2, so far. There are 59 albums and over 3,500 photos in G1. And growing. I thought it was a good time to make the upgrade.

It's easy to upgrade Gallery:
FAQ: How to upgrade Gallery2?
And migrate to G2 from G1 for that matter:
FAQ: Can I update from G1 -> G2?
As long as you can use something like ImageMagick you should be able to get away with 30MB. I've seen people using G2.3 with 24MB, but you'd have better success if processing larger images with more memory.

I just uninstalled GD & NetPBM and a few other things and re-ran the thumbnail creation in Maintenance. I got trace output on three files that failed to work and they all indicate insufficient memory. Here's a small portion of the trace for one of the image files:

My host company doesn't allow me to upgrade Gallery. They have a process where they do the upgrades quarterly (or whatever). I am doing the migration from G1 to G2.

Your hosting company sucks.
Gallery is software that's installed on your site that you should be able to update and maintain.
They haven't upgraded Gallery in over 1-1/2 years. (that's over 6 quarters)
Not only that, but this isn't software a host should be maintaining. If they upgraded Gallery on their client's sites all of the sudden all of their clients would be getting pages about upgrading instead of people visiting their site.

Why? All you need to do is change files on the server and run the upgrade script.
