Personally, I don't like the fancy "Cooliris" slideshow. The interface (especially the options) is imho very poor. I'd suggest integrating a much less intrusive ajax slideshow, which would fit better into the new KISS philosophy anyway.
A good example is Galleriffic: http://www.twospy.com/galleriffic/
It is a jQuery slideshow which supports preloading and the browser history and can very easily be styled. The minified version is only 14kb.

That's the beauty of Gallery. Go for it! :)

Personally, I like the Cooliris 3D wall slideshow much better than Galleriffic, it's interface it better and easier to use, IMO. :)

But if you do make another slideshow plugin I'm sure it will see heavy use. People are always looking for other options and some people don't like Cooliris purely because it's flash based.

Uh, I really can't understand how anyone can find that interface usable, let alone find it even remotely appealing.
Try letting anyone unexperienced use it and change the interval of image changes. I'm sure he won't be able to find it, or rather click those advertising links. By the way: One of the good features of Galleriffic is how easy you can theme it. I use it in a different setup (thumbnails under the main image, start/pause, time-interval etc. on top). More generally, I don't have anything against Flash, for example I like multi-upload widgets, but I don't see the need for it here.

Or add that feature request to the Field of Dreams roadmap and maybe someone will build it and they will come :)

I don't like the simplicity of the galleriffic slideshow or .... it is just the examples I don't like. Too each his own....
That is the appealing aspect of open source, YOU have the power to change it the way you want.

Ask specific questions if you get stuck on how to proceed.
If you don't have the skills to write a module I am sure that in the future, if the slideshow that ships with G3, is not for everybody; then somebody will write one.
The great aspects of a free open source project.
