WPG2 just plain doesn't work

Found this little gem in the FAQ.

* Most common cause of this problem is you do not have enough php memory allocated. Gallery2 requires at least 16MB (*and maybe more) to run. You can increase the memory allocation by adding the following line to your .htaccess in your wordpress directory:

phpvalue memorylimit 32M

That's cute. Just insert this line, and make your wordpress site stop working. Any other suggestions?

Just put it in the .htaccess file? Anywhere? Is there a particular place the line goes so is doesn't break anything?

Adding those lines to the .htaccess file renders wordpress inoperable. Adding your line to the config.php file in gallery2 does nothing. I'm still getting blank pages. I'll try upping the limit, but I really don't understand why I'm having to go in and hack the programs if this plugin is supposed to be ready.

I followed all these instructions, and no soap. I can't imagine why these programs work for you and not for me. I used all the latest software, unisntalled and reinstalled everything, and followed every piece of advice I could find, and I still can't get this to work. Obviously the issue lies in not enough memory, but none of these suggestions seem able to make a difference.

I'm cuious what "Out of the Box" means. As in "I installed wordpress, Gallery2 and WPG2 plugin, and voila? Everything works perfectly? How did you install these things? I used Fantastico from my server's cpanel. Was that wrong?

Has anyone ever added lines to the .htaccess file and gotten any result other than crashing the website?

I'm not a programmer, so this is all fairly new to me, but I'm not an idiot. This is outrageously problematic.

Please I really need help.

I did first install the gallery 2 and wpg2 and it gave me 500 errors and I followed the instructions on the "1&1" post and after that,
I'm now getting only blank pages. I change the config to make the memory bigger but still nothing happens.

Looks like you have rewrite rules working on you G2 install.

I don't recall if you can have G2 installed under the same directory you have WP installed. It should be in the docs some place.

Also you don't enable and disable rewrite from within G2 if you have the WPG2 plugin activated. You have to configure it through the embedded url.

Stop worrying about rewite until you can get the WPG2 module to work.
If you get a blank page that is usually are resource limitation on your server:
FAQ: I get only a blank screen when trying to view my Gallery, what's wrong?

Ask you host if you have access to your error logs. Look there for some clue.

I was reading this page: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:rewrite
It says, go to Site Admin -> URL Rewrite.

Unfortunately, I don't have the 'URL Rewrite' as a link on the left site menu.

Any idea?
