I find in beta 2, the space in multi-word keywords in IPTC of a photo will be converted to a dot '.' during photo upload. This dot will be displayed and look strange. Can I ask what's the purpose of this dot?

There was lots of discussion about this. I fought a long hard fight but in the end multi word tags will have a dot.
Two tickets that relate:
https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/gallery/ticket/523
https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/gallery/ticket/454

I have thought about stripping out the dot before the tag is displayed in the theme. The data in the backend DB will still have the dot. It shold be a simple edit to the tag module.

wow.. really a long hard fight. I only use Adobe for tagging, so don't know there are so a lot of different tagging delimiting concept.

I guess I need to put a dot instead of space for multi word tag adding. It seems not so intuitive. Though I don't like this arrangement, I can't think a simple solution on it.

I will bring this issue up at the code sprint: http://gallery.menalto.com/GalleryCon09
I feel that this is an important issue. I normaly go with the flow in most circumstances, but I fell this this is one feature that we have to get right for more than 80% of the users.

More info

Sure it adds code complexity and it might not be done right away, but I feel that this is an important feature.

Complexity: nothing that a few beers, brain cells, carpel tunnel, and some heated discussions can't solve. :-)

Find me a tagging standard that I can get behind and I'll implement it. Otherwise, I'm going to take the easy way out and follow the del.icio.us approach, since they represent a reasonable tagging standard.
