I noticed that module google maps has been added and it appears on my pages, but since I do not have any images in albums that are geotaged yet, the map shows Amsterdam(Europe). Can the default be set to map of the location where the gallery is located and where there is an image with geotag it would override it?

We haven't yet added code to extract geotags from images yet, so that module isn't yet very functional. It's currently showing the location of the Gallery team meetup in Amsterdam More's coming on that.

I don't know what the current state of the gmaps module is (git still seems to have a not-so-useful one) but as someone with lots of geotagged pictures, the G2 module bogs down a lot. I noticed the coppermine maps plugin/hack/whatever has functionality that rather than trying to display every individual picture with its own tag, merges close tags into a marker that zooms in when you click on it. Might be something worth considering if/when the module is expanded.
