Single Image ie; whale tail with mountains in the background.
Would fit in albums: whales, marine mammals, nature, mountains

Suggested Best Solution for quickly adding a single photo and assigning it to multiple albums: ?

Thanks.

That would be called tagging. Though the individual tags are not albums, but someone can click on a tag link and get all of the images with that tag.

Yes but there is no 'searching' based on a tag word and I'm looking for people to be able to use the search field. Though tags are extremely useful, if the number of tags grows quite large it would not be user friendly for people to have to identify their keyword in the list of tags. It would be far more likely for them to search for a word that comes to mind.

Now, if the search could be linked to include 'tags' that would be just fine.

Search can include tags, but it doesn't yet. Would you please file a feature request for this? Thanks.

IMHO the ability to assign one single image to multiple albums at the same time is very important feature.
I need the particular photo belong to personal album of author, (e.g. album "John") and at the same time also to topics album (e.g. album "Nature").
The album "Nature" should contain images of this topic from different authors, like "John", "Peter", etc.
And vice versa, Peter's album should also contain photos, which belong to common nature album as well.
Now we cannot achieve this.
I chose gallery 3 for the needs of our photoclub gallery seven months ago, since I considered this feature obvious.
Anyway, it is a great product, I like its compact form. I think this is the way to go, not mammoth and hardly manageable applications.

When can I expect this functionality?
Is it planned into 3.0 version?

Regards,
Andy Salay.

Before the first beta? Interesting.

It's not planned for the core, probably will never be in the core. But you or someone else can create a module for this.

Having the same image in multiple albums seems odd to me. Why not tag them?

Have you looked at G2? There's a replica module for G2 that can put the same image in multiple albums:

This would be a very similar feature to the already a few times requested "Favorite Album". I agree with andysalay: This would be a very useful feature, which could be used for a bunch of different needs.

I tried the "Tag photo" option. I tagged my favorite photos with a tag called "Favorite". Then i created a link to all my tagged photos. Everything is working as expected until here. But when i preview one of my favorite photos and click to the "previous" or "next" button, i don't see the prev. next favorite photos. I then see the prev. next photo of the original album the photo is stored in. This is not a solution for my needs. A module which can do the above mentioned would be great.

Why not?
For our purposes it is user unfriendly.
For viewing a collection of images based on a tag the user must know the tag and then enter it.
Nobody of the occasional viewers of the gallery will enter the tags, they even don't know there is such feature.

We need an album - based on the author of the photo.
And on the same level also another grouping, based on the topic of the photo.
The visitor of the gallery must instantly see the grouping by authors; and the grouping by topics as well.
He should have an offering what to choose, then he can decide, what he wants to see.
Such attitude mimics user friendliness of the interface.

I consider this feature so natural, that I even didn't think of it should not be implemented.

hmm... thats very bad.

Please add our request to the wishlist..
Or, better, schedule it. I am sure very many users will take benefit of it.
Unforunately, I am not able to program a module for gallery.

Yes, before the first beta, I knew about G2, and I was sure G3 will be much better and solid. I like the user base and helpfulness of the coders, and I was sure this is the way to go. Not only code itself make a good app, the support is contributing with a great deal as well.
I knew that in G2 is that functionality. (Through a module, though, but it doesn't matter - the feature was available) I did't expect such natural feature to be omited.

It's not that it was omitted, all of that stuff has to be rewritten from scratch. Replica is not part of the core of G2 and wasn't even available for the first few releases. Someone will need to create a module to do this in G3. There's a lot that G2 does that G3 doesn't do. G2 has had years to grow and mature with developers adding additional functionality over the years. G3 will need that same sort of time to grow and have additional functionality to grow with.

G2 is a huge, bloated, very robust, extremely flexible, everything plus the kitchen sink application. G3 is lean and mean.

You can add requests for new features here:

I do confirm it would be a very useful feature. In my case I have some thousands pictures of statues, paintings, bronzes artefacts, ceramics, etc. coming from about a hundred museums, exibitions, excavation sites, etc.
I would like of course to create galleries showing the pieces by location (British Museum, Archeological Museum of Rabat, archeological site of Velia, archeological site of Oropos, ...) but also by type (all the statues, all the ceramics) and sub-type (all the statues which are copies of the original Venus de Milo, etc.) : I would thus really need such a functionality.

If Gallery (either version 2 or 3) can't really supply me with this kind of opportunities can I find them in another tool ? Coppermine or other ?

Thanks for your help.

G2 can do this. Read this thread and you'll see this little gem: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:replica

Yes, we are hearing that G2 can do this. However, we really enjoy the new interface of G3 and this would be a feature that would seem to be most broadly needed by many. For instance, even a picture of Uncle Joe going fishing would spawn a need for Joe to be in two albums. One for Fishing pictures and another for Family. More thoughts...

Thanks for your quick answer. I'll look into it more deeply and eventually come back if any issue arise.
