I am looking for Network Attached Storage (NAS) for my home & small business with 0.5-4 TB capacity and RAID 1 or better redundancy.

And less than $700, too.

Buffalo, Netgear and D-Link have products but some of the reviews on Amazon and Newegg are horror stories.

I'm also considering FreeNAS, but I need the hardware.

Comments?

I only read the "bad" reviews on Amazon and Newegg for a laugh. Almost every person posting bad reviews about their "dead" drive or "dead" memory are morons. Yes, it's possible they got a DOA piece of hardware, but why post a bad review about it? Just RMA it and get a replacement. What's really funny are those who say they did this and kept getting bad hardware. Hmmm, me thinks it's the operator or maybe the no-name brand hardware you're using that might be the issue.

Not having experience with NAS myself, I'd go with Netgear for home or even small business use. Netgear acquired Infrant a couple years ago, barring that they haven't screwed with the product line much, I've heard a lot of great stuff about them and their ReadyNAS line.

Plus their X-RAID system is pretty dang cool:

I agree that most of the negative reviews usually have a fatal disqualifying flaw, usually revealed as a fundamental misunderstanding by the writer.

For each of these products in question, though, there are one or two reviews where the writer thoroughly documents a problem that I would or could imagine having. I am getting ready to submit my own negative Amazon review on a cheap Seagate external disk that has proved unreliable after light usage in less than a year. Had I seen the negative reviews for this product, I would have avoided it.

Horrible first-tier support is something I've come to expect. It does not surprise me to hear that agents won't deviate from script or are not even aware that a particular problem exists.

For some really entertaining customer reviews (in this case, for hotel rooms), search out the one-star reviews on http://tripadvisor.com.
