I have attached the error message I got when I tried to move about 25 photos from one album to one higher up in the tree.

Yep, you're right it doesn't work. If you could go to https://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/gallery/newticket and create a ticket so I don't forget I would appreciate it. You'll need a sourceforge id.
