I have the same problem with Alpha 3 and 4.
When I try to add files from my local server when using the latest firefox or IE8 I have the following issue.
I have set up '/home/paulcook/pictureupload' as an authorized path. When I then try to 'server add' photos to an album and I browse to some subfolders of this path, the folders show up incorrectly named. I have a folder '/home/paulcook/pictureupload/2009/2009-01' which contains the files. However it shows up in the 'server add' browse tree as '/home/paulcook/pictureupload/0/2009-01'.
The second problem with 'server add' only occurs with firefox.
Once I select the files I wish to add and click 'add', I get the following fatal error;
Service Temporarily Unavailable..The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
I in then try again right away, the progress bar appears and then nothing else happens. The 'cancel' button also does not respond. I have to click the 'x' to back out from that window.
With IE8 I am able to add the files with no problems except for the progress bar which does not appear until at 100% and the import is complete.
Please ask if you need any more specific details.
Cheers
Paul

Looks like you're hitting this issue:

We'll fix it (but it'll take a little while)

Looked at that ticket and changed my folder name to include not just numbers and that bit of it then worked fine. However whilst using firefox I have the same issue of not being able to add files from server.
