Don't allow deleting, only hiding

I don't want anyone but an administrator to actually permanently delete items. I instead want them to be hidden from everyone's view, but still in the database. I am good with PHP & MySQL, but am new to Gallery2 and am still getting used to the structure of the code. Can someone direct me on how to accomplish this?
