Upgrade path from Beta1 to final release?

On http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/gallery/roadmap I read that the Beta1 is targeted for 04/06/09 (in 2 weeks).

Will the Beta1 support an upgrade path to the final Gallery3 release? So can we start using Beta1 without loosing data when upgrading to the final release?

Alpha 3 should be out this weekend.

Thanks for the feedback. But a Alpha version has no impact on my question whether a Beta release supports an upgrade path to the final Gallery3 version.

yes, we plan to introduce an upgrade path with the first beta.
that is, there won't be any upgrade from alpha 3 to the first beta. but you'll be able to upgrade the first beta to the next release after that, be that another beta or the gallery 3.0 release or an RC.

you can track this item at:

Good to hear about the upgrade path. I will follow the RSS feed of the ticket.

Quick question, is there a rough time-line for version 3. Just wondering as I'm starting up a new site which it's biggest feature will be the gallery and wondering if I should hold off until version 3 is released or run with version 2.3 and do an upgrade then.

Thanks,

The goal is that when you install beta 1, you won't have to do any more reinstalls after that (beta 2 will let you upgrade from beta 1, and so on). Releases up to and including beta 1 will require a reinstall. This saves us from writing a lot of upgrade code while things are still in flux.

No date set for beta 1 as alpha 3 is not out yet.
See the first post for the rough time-line.

Alpha 3 is out for four weeks now. Regarding to http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/gallery/roadmap the date for Beta 1 was 04/13/09 - so 7 days late. If you do not have the need to launch now, Beta 1 seems to be out not to far in the future...

Good point. With Beta, once the full 3.1 is released, is upgrading easy if I do start a new gallery with the soon to be released beta version.

Thanks,

is upgrading easy

I can only say I think so because the code has not been written yet to even test. But you can count on a better upgrade experience than upgradeing G2.. as G3 has far less tables and other houskeeping to do durring a upgrade.

G3's upgrader will be like its installer: as close to one-click as we can possibly make it. From Beta 1 onwards you won't have to reinstall again, we'll support upgrading you (although it's a beta so it may have catastrophic bugs-- that's life).

Checking into this page http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/gallery/roadmap a few times a day to watch the status. Can't wait to try beta 1

You will have to wait for alpha 4 first. It is coming along nicely.

We were going to release beta 1, but it's taking longer than we hoped for so we decided to put out alpha 4 sooner so that we can show you something fun to play with while you wait :-)
