integration with digikam

I've long been thinking about how wonderful it would be to have some sort of integration between the databases of digikam and gallery. Tagging for instance comes to mind as one place where the advantages would be obvious - tag in digikam, display in gallery.
have such an approach been evaluated or considered? The gallery project and the digikam project both are great examples of what opensource can do for image management - streamlining the process further would be *great*!

Right now we're up to our ears in just making the production functional, stable and fast. We'll be exploring moving in that direction in the 3.1 timeframe (and/or you can write your own integration!)
