Is there a way to automatically set the newest item in an album as the album highlight?

Basically what I'm trying to do is set my gallery to automatically update the album highlight whenever something new gets uploaded. It seems like it would be a pretty basic feature but so far the closest thing I've been able to find has been the random highlight module. This wouldn't be such an issue if not for the fact that I'm also unable to use the 'set highlight' function to set an item as the highlight of its parent album. For some reason it will only set the item as the highlight of an album at least 2 levels above it.
