gallery thumbnail visible, but gallery contents password protected?

I would like to do this,

1) user logs in or visits gallery page, can see all the gallery thumbnails

2) if user tries to click on a gallery that he does not have permission for, they get a permissions error

3) only the galleries where the user has view permissions can they see the entire gallery

Now, I know how to make the gallery hidden, but I want to have the main gallery thumbnail visible to all users even if they don't have permission to view the entire contents of the gallery.

Can someone shed some light on how to accomplish this?
