a few hours ago I upgraded from 2.3B to stable G2.3.
All time I used gallery, I noticed that G2 work TOO slow.
And this performance almost not depends from amount of files in gallery.
I have P4 3,2 dedicated server with 2GB of RAM, my MySQL have settings for large mysql servers, my apache have optimal settings for high traffic, my PHP also have optimal settings for such server...
I have another one project, big forum (SMF 1.1.7 MySQL+PHP), on the same server, with 2+mln posts, 7000 users each day, 300 users at same time online, - this project works megafast on my server, pages loads ussually 0...0,5sec.
In comparison with Gallery: Gallery have only 50-70 users per day, not more than 10 users online... and gallery is tooooooooooooooooooooo slow. Each page returned in 2-3 seconds. This is too much. Google and other search engine bots even not want to crawl my web-site 
What makes it so slow?
MySQL is optimized. In SHOW PROCESSES() I see, queries to gallery DB runs very fast. So, it looks that mySQL is not bottle neck. Then what? PHP acceleratiors...- i'm not use them and will not. Really, they sometimes load server more than help
