very simple links under thumbs module - few pointers needed.

I have some links under my thumbs that are hard coded in the album.tpl file, but wondered what I would need to do to create a plugging. I have followed the tut about creating the html module but this creates links in the sidebar, what would be needed to create the links under each thumb?
Could the hole lot be coded just in the module.inc file?
