I have v 1, having spam comments issue, what should I upgrade to?

I have tons of spam in my comments. I see that I should upgrade to a better version but which one?
When I upgrade, will I be able to keep all my content as is (besides the spam) or will I have to start from scratch?

Yes, you will keep all your content (including the Spam, if you don't remove it before).
No, you don't have to start from scratch.

I have hundreds and hundreds of spam in my comments. Is there an easy way to get rid of them all at once before I upgrade?

Sort of. Gallery 1 has a spam detection tool.
You can use this to find and delete the spam comments.

So, which version should I upgrade to?
Do you have a suggestion as to where I can find out how to use the spam detection tool?
Is this something I can pay someone to do? That is, to delete all the spam and upgrade my site for me?
I'm obviously a novice and I fear I could get sucked into a time warp trying to fix this myself...

Completely up to you. 1.5.9 is the easiest way. 2.2.6 is the future way ;-)
Go the admin section you will see it quickly.

You could open a paid support ticket and someone (i guess it will be me *g*) will fix this.
