Gallery vs. Google Picassa

I am in the process of giving my family website a face lift and maybe moving to a new host.

I don't have the time to really work on this and I have asked a local web site developer to help. They have recommended moving from my current host, Startlogic (slow and a few outages lately, tech support answers but usually can't help) to Hostmysite.com (don't know anything about them).

What worries me most is moving/establishing/re-creating my Gallery on a new host. The Gallery currently has 1513 items, all large files. The local web site developer strongly reccomends using Google Picassa for my Gallery software. I don't know if he knows anything about Gallery.

I don't know anything about Picassa, and I really like Gallery V2 (except for my host serving speed). Can someone explain the benefits/differences between Picassa and Gallery so I can have an informed conversation with my web guy?

Thanks!

FYI - He is selling me a 40 hour block of time for $2,200 USD to do this work.

Crikey,

It sounds to me like he is just being lazy. I have incorporated Gallery 2 into a few websites now and it is not that complicated and really having the gallery hosted on your own site means it should load faster. If you already have the pictures on your own site I suspect you really dont want to spend the time reuploading them all to Picassa. Don´t get me wrong Picassa is a great tool but I think gallery 2 is more personal and as a result advantageous!

It shouldn´t be overly complicated to move your gallery to a new host. It´s just a question of backing up the database and moving it over.

Anyway you have probably finished this by now but if not feel free to send me a pm.

I´m based in Peru so probably quite a lot cheaper!

Thanks for the reply.

My web-site is still just sitting. Let me think about what to do, I haven't messed with it in a long time.

You do site development, right?
