(eventually) Upgrading to G2 / duplicate photo files

Hi there,

First of all, am I correct in understanding that G2 will allow us to have the same photo (and affiliated description, comments, etc.) tied to more than one gallery at a time?

And if so, how would upgrading from Gallery 1.3.x work?

Let's say that I now have the SAME picture of a particular flower in three different galleries: Costa Rica, Macro shots, Flowers.

With Gallery 1.3.x, that file is obviously duplicated three times on my server. With Gallery 2.0, I'm assuming that it would not be, is that right?

And if my understanding is correct, how would upgrading work from 1.3.x to G2? Would G2 recognize the duplication of the file, and appropriately delete the extra copies while maintaining the presence of the photo + data within the separate galleries?

And additionally, will there be any way to have this 'shared' info listed within each item, as in:

Quote:

[Picture of flower here]
This photo is also in the following galleries: Macro shots, Flowers (hyperlinked)

This, IMHO, would really be ideal

I'm no G2 developer, but I don't think it is likely that the G1-to-G2-convertor would scan for duplicate copies for a number of reasons:
1. Very few users have duplicate photos in their Gallery, so priority for this would be pretty low.
2. Finding duplicate copies of photos would either be based on filename and size (error prone, especially with short filenames like aaa, aab etc.), or comparing each photo with all the others (can Imagemagick compare photos?), which will take lots of time.

However, in G2 it would be no problem to have links to the same photo in other albums.

ThatAdamGuy: I'm writing the migration module, and I have no plans to look for duplicate images. You will have to look for them yourself.

However, I will also be interested in figuring out the image sharing thing, so there will be tools. I just have no idea what they will be.

Ah ha! I appreciate that definitive answer on the duplicate photo thing.

I'm unsure what you're getting at with regards to the 'Image sharing,' though. Were you referring to my earlier suggestion of "This photo is also in these galleries:..." idea or something else?
