big gallery, slow random-block

i have a very large gallery - 22,800 photos. random-block.php (the standalone version) takes very, long to load, although it does work when it finally loads (unless the browser times out). is there any way to make it load in an acceptable timeframe?

the random block page takes about 80 seconds to load. can anyone tell me if this is normal behavior for an album this large, or is there anything i can do to make it faster? is there any way for me to make it a process that runs every 30 minutes or so as a cron job? its not important to me that it generate a different random image EVERY time the page loads...
