Gallery Remote can't find Gallery at URL

Yes, I know that there is a FAQ concerning this, but I don't want users to the site to have to go in and tweak their properties file in order to get this working.
I have Gallery 2.4 at two different webservers. Gallery Remote ver 1.5.1-b36(2) works fine at one site, but not at the other site without making the tweak in the properties file to force it to recognize a gallery2 installation.

Also, even though I have the slideshow applet installed and activated at the site where Gallery Remote doesn't work, the applet doesn't show up anywhere, no menu item or anything. Could this be a permissions problem on the webserver? or Something else?
