How can I show the left side bar in the "Ice" & "Floatrix" theme permanently?

I would like to let the left side bar in the "ICE" (and "Floatrix") theme be shown permenantly (without overlaying anything, e.g. the text on the left side) instead of displaying it after clicking the button "Show Sidebar" on the left side above which might not be found easily by guests. Could not find a setting doing this. What would I have to do? Nice greetings, Dirk.
