Hi,
I'm having trouble getting started. I read the FAQS and "Getting Started" pages but I stll can't figure out how to set up the look that I want. I have the basic colors and logo/banner that I want to use but I need guidance on how to do this. I have a genealogy website that I maintain and would like to incorporate photo albums into the site.
Any suggestions and/or help would be deeply appreciated!
thank you so much for listening,
Janine

You have to ask specific questions, to get better answers. What is the look you want? Lets start with the rest of the site first. URL? Then you can build a template file that looks like the rest of the pages in your site and we can build a 'wrapper' for gallery.

Hi again,
I picked a Matrix theme and put a logo on my Gallery site. Now I'm wondering how to add an album. Whem I clicked on the link to add one, it gives me this message..."The name of this album on your hard disk.".
I thought I was adding an album that would show up in my server area...not my hard disk. Sorry...I'm confused...what does my hard disk have to do with what I'm doing.
thanks for your help,
Janine

I guess it should say servers hard disk. The name of the album can be different from the name it is stored on the server.

Hi,
I see...I was taking the comment too literally... Thank you for explaining this...
Was wondering...is there any way to change the line below each photo from
"Owner: Jane Doe" to "Submitter: Jane Doe"?
many thanks,
Janine

you will need to edit :
<div class="owner summary"> {g->text text="Owner: %s" arg1=$item.owner.fullName|default:$item.owner.userName} </div>
in modules/core/templates/blocks/ItemInfo.tpl
read the directions at the top of the file.

Thank you Dave!
Your recommendations were easy to implement!
My initial work is at www.illinoisancestors.org/cemphotos
There is still so much I can't figure out...sorry...
For example, I have an extra line (the file name) showing at the bottom of my photos that I'd like to remove...the only data I want to show are the comments, the date the photo was added and the submitter of the photo. How do I remove the file name?
The main page has the phrase "Illinois Ancestors Tombstone Gallery" showing twice. Is there anyway to remove one of them?
Hmmm...I'd also like to put some kind of introduction underneath the second showing of the phrase "Illinois Ancestors Tombstone Gallery". Is this possible?
Sorry for all these questions...I'm not very technical...
thanks a bunch,
Janine

you mean the thumbs?
album.tpl
{$child.title|markup}
one is the title of the album and the other is the breadcrumb.
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:How_Do_I_Remove_the_Root_Album_Link
or if you want to do it just on the root album
album.tpl change
to
Some themes like PG and Carbon as well as others have a user interface for some of this like what you want here.
Do you want to create a custom theme? Then you will have to edit and make one: http://gallery.menalto.com/node/70763#comment-255788
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Themes:Anatomy_of_a_Theme
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Themes:How_To
Ask one question at a time because if my answers don't work or make sense then the rest of the thread becomes very confusing.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for your help...I made the changes to album.tpl to remove the title in the root album only. Then I made a change removing the title under the thumbnails. Both worked perfectly...thanks!
But before I made these changes I brought up my website this morning and all the thumbnails have disappeared. And when I tried to add more photos, none of the new thumbnails appeared either. Oops...I must have done something wrong...
Where should I start looking at
www.illinoisancestors.org/cemphotos
many thanks,
Janine

Hi again,
Per your guidance, I made changes to theme.tpl and iteminfo.tpl.
Do you think I made an erroneous change to one of these templates?
I've been reviewing them and can't see the problem...do you want me to send you the latest versions so you can see what I did?
heartfelt thanks,
Janine

Hi Dave,
Thank you...the remedy worked!
One last question concerning appearance...
Should I be modifying iteminfo.tpl to do the following:
I'd like to change the comment at the root album level from "Size: 3 photos (12 total)" to "Size: 3 counties (12 total)"
Then at the album level, I'd like to change the comment from "Size: 3 photos (12 total)" to "Size: 3 cemeteries (12 total)".
The sub-albums look fine except that it would be great to move the date and size over more to the right because at the root level, it's running into my description.
Thank you so much for your time and for being patient with me!

yes iteminfo.tpl is the file to edit but I guess you will need to do a if root album check to change countries to cemeteries.

if you get stuck please start a new thread.

Hi Dave,
I tried to put a long "if" statement covering the root album, then the album level followed by the sub-album level but I couldn't get my statements to work. I'm sorry but I don't know enough about this language to make the code work.
Er...what should I do?
sincere thanks,
Janine

I have not used it yet, but after reading the topic I am going to use it. This will help me in making my own photo gallery in my computer.
