Hello,
Your albums/photos does not need to be copied. You just copy the new Gallery code-files over the old.

Hello,
smart-ftp is a good FTP client and is the correct to for transfering files from your computer to your webspace.
The problem is, that i don't know the environment of your webspace.
"1.5-RC2" indicates that its an automatic installation from your webhoster. Those installations are not that easy to upgrade if you are completely new to this.
Its also sort of complicated to explain this all via this forum.
As this is a forum for Gallery related issues and not how to use FTP-clients ;-)
But maybe we'll get it done..
First thing you have to do is to connect with smart-ftp to your webspace.
Are you able to do that?

Hi Jens, thank you for getting back to me. Let me explain.(Sorry if this is a bit long). When I first contacted Gallery a few months ago I was told to download 1.5.7 then get back to gallery for further help. Hence I downloaded 1.5.7
The response I got below
1st. I suggest you upgrade gallery to 1.5.7. You will get very little help with such a old version.
Then once that is done then you can come back and ask specific on what you want to do.
Dave
I just thought using SmartFTP was what you used to edit Gallery sorry I dont know any better. Any suggestion i.e different version of gallery or start from sratch but be able to copy albums etc over to a newer version.
I am using dreamweaver to copy my existing web pages, I'm actually doing it from sratch(just copying text)(I'm a novice at that too but getting there) We have 3 pages on our current website that has gallery 1.5-RC2 (www.azaap.com) (IPOWER do not support this so dont understand the comment "automatic installation from your webhoster" sorry, like I said I never built the site first time round.
Yes I can connect to my remote server but if there is another way to do this I'm all ears. Any HELP or Suggestions of the best route to take Please advise, thank you.

Hello,
as is said, SmartFTP is a good tool.
So you need to figure out how to use SmartFTP and how to connect to your Webspace with it.
If you got this, then extract the Gallery 1.5.7 Zip on your Home-PC and transfer the content of it over one of your Galleries in your webspace.

If I copy the gallery directories to the new location, won't they overwrite all the existing folders and any setting, albums and photos already there. Won't I have to start from scratch, running the config wizard?
or are there certain files that I can copy that will not disrupt the existing gallery?
Thanks,
Carol
I'm using wf_ftp and yes I can connect and see all the files on my computer and the host I'm using.

Hello Carol,
There is a "code part" and an "albums part".
All the code is inside the "gallery" it can be overwritten by a fresh install and nothing will get damaged.
Well, when you did everything fine ;-)
The only things that can be overrwritten in case you did not a proper renaming of .default files are skins and layout things.
The other part is the "albums" folder.
This *should* be outside the Gallery folder, a lot people put it inside.
There are all photos, comments, albumdata etc.
If you have an existing Gallery and want to merge it with another, THEN it can happen that you overwrite albums.
It can happen when you have an albumfolder "album01" in both installations.
I hope that helped ?!

I didn't know anything about renaming ".default" files, I don't see any instructions about how to rename files so that the everything doesn't get overwritten.
If I just copy over the gallery directory and all sub directories, won't everything, like sign in info, license info all get over written?

Hi,
you see those .default files in the html_wrap and css folder.
Just all files of the "Gallery distribution" will be overwritten.
We do not consider your photos or your settings (config. php) to be part of the "distribution".
You can download a Gallery archive and look inside. Then you see what would be overwritten.

I did copy over everything. I tagged the gallery folder and ftped the whole thing to the host and over wrote what was there. I did have to briefly go through the config wizard, but it was simple and no problem.
When I originally installed the Gallery, I couldn't get through the wizard because of something like a jpeg program location that didn't exist. Once I figured out what the config was looking for and not finding, and removed it, it went through and saved.
It's beautiful and I LOVE it,
Thanks
