How to show all sub-album thumbnails in a collapsible list

I am trying to make clicking a sub-album thumbnail reveal a listing of thumbnails for all the items in that sub-album.

To demonstrate I made an image:

To do this, what code do I need for the theme.inc file and the album.tpl file?
