Give us your Gallery/webserver information to get a faster answer.
Get this information from the PHP diagnostic (in the configuration wizard).
Gallery URL (optional but very useful): http://usergallery.myhomegameroom.com/gallery
Gallery version: 1.5.7
Apache version: 1.3.29
PHP version: 4.4.8
Graphics Toolkit: ImageMagick
Operating system: Windows Vista Ultimate
Web browser/version (if applicable): Firefox 2.0.0.12

I have several different Gallery installs on my 1and1 developer package.

Before everyone crucifies 1and1, all the galleries but this one work just fine, and I think there may be a corrupted album or something causing problems.

I've had problems with 500 errors for awhile, and after reviewing the apache logs, I've found nothing substantiative.

1and1 updated a bunch of their servers last night to a new version of linux, and the troublesome gallery is still troublesome, only worse.

I went so far as to back up the albums folder, blow the gallery away and recreate it. It worked fine with no albums - just the standalone gallery. Then, I started to restore the tar file (approx 15 GB) and things were going fine - I'd hit refresh, the album structure got recreated, the albums started to repopulate etc.

I'd continue refreshing, stuff would look good, then eventually it'd go back to the 500 error.

Seems there has to be an album that is causing the problem when it gets restored - or some file causing the problem.

Can anyone offer any guidance on how to find the suspect file, so I can replace or delete it?

Hello,

The reason for the error500 should be seeable in the errorlogs of your apache.

If not, in >90% of all cases a/the .htaccess file is the reason.

What would I look for in the htaccess?

I have reviewed the error logs and there's nothing there.

rename the .htacces file in the Gallery folder and see if that helps.

No difference.

I've removed the entire gallery, rebuilt with an updated version and restored the tar of the albums directory, same error unfortunately.

If I rename the albums folder and create a new one, the gallery works. If I restore the 'old' albums folder from the tar file, it errors out again.

The tar archive is 15gb, the gallery has 150+ users. Unfortunately, it's not something small and easy to recreate from scratch.

Does this error 500 also occur on a total different fresh Gallery 1.5.7?

No.

I even tried a 1.7 install, same error as soon as I restore the backup of the albums folder.

And there is nothing about the error 500 in your apache error log?

Nothing

I just sent my 1and1 another request to verify the errors are logged in the same apache access log they gave me access to. There are no errors logged in there at all, which seems strange.

Well, getting help from 1and1 has been like pulling teeth. They told me HTTP error logs are not accessible on shared hosting platforms, sorry.

One support person told me if I gave her the URL in question, they'd go to the page, and send me the info out of the error logs, but the next support person I got told me that the only logs I can get access to are the access logs (really, imagine that!)

I did log visits to my working gallery, and my non-working gallery, and have the info from the logs here, in case it offers something

Log entry for the *working* site

69.136.169.143 - - [13/Mar/2008:22:03:44 -0400] "GET /gallery/ HTTP/1.1" 200 27092 gallery.myhomegameroom.com "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; .NET CLR 3.0.04506; InfoPath.1)" "-"

Log entry for the *non-working* site

69.136.169.143 - - [13/Mar/2008:22:03:46 -0400] "GET /gallery/ HTTP/1.1" 200 645 usergallery.myhomegameroom.com "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; .NET CLR 3.0.04506; InfoPath.1)" "-"

So, if you see anything helpful here, please LMK. I'm gonna work more on getting the error log out of them.

Hello John,

:-(
The 1and1 support is indeed bad. And number of people complaining about 1and1 and error500 problems is increasing.
This is also happening with Gallery2 installations :-(

But without the errorlog, i can't tell you what the reason is :-(

After much pain with 1and1, they found the problem and fixed it.

Only problem is, they didn't tell me what fixed it.

I re-ran the setup wizard and it broke again.

This time, they fixed it by adding the following to my .htaccess file:

addhandler x-mapp-php5 .php
directoryindex index.php
