archshrk -- the suggestion of adding those lines to the .htaccess file worked! I didn't know which one to add them to, but after the third try (two in Gallery-related directories and finally my main WordPress directory), mine isn't broken anymore. Thanks!!

I recently noticed a weird issue that only happens when I am logged into Wordpress. I have WPG2 activated and I use the sidebar grid widget. When the page loads in a different tab in firefox, the sidebar stops loading at the WPG widget. I disabled cookies and it loaded fine. I'm not sure why it only does it when I'm logged into Wordpress, but I tried the above and now the page loads like a champ. I'm with 1and1 as well, and I didn't want to leave them either, so my thanks to Archshrk, you rock yo.

That said, I did find a resolution to fix this plugin page that I hadn't seen posted here and figured I would share with others. Here's what I did:

-Go to your website address with the following string to access a support page:
http://yourwebsitename/gallery/lib/support/
(For those newbies, be sure that 'yourwebsitename' includes the .com, .net or whatever domain suffix you use.)
-Login to this support page following the instructions and password
-Click on Cache Maintenance
-Be sure the 'Downloadable Plugin Cache' checkbox is marked (all others dont have to be for the plugin issue)
-Click 'Clear Cache'

This worked for me, and now, instead of getting external plugins using the gallery plugin page, I download and install the plugins manually using an ftp client.

HTH,
Timo

Thanks this also worked for me.
I even tried reuploading that DIR fresh and even copying that same dir over from my other active gallery 2 sites.
That stuff did not work but your suggestion has helped me, thank you.

Hi every one,

I am a new user of G2 and I have to say that is an amazing prog.
I am not hosted by 1 and 1 and I apologize if my post is not accurate and/or appropriate, but I might have a simple solution for the 500 problem that I accounter too
My websit is host on an apache server and it seem's that while i was executing the preinstall php all the automatically created directory were with the 755 right with impossibility to change it (the server own the right). Impossible for me to then edit any subfolder.

But by uncompress the g2 folders directly on the server and make "manual" installation I was owner of the directory ( with possiblity to change CHMOD at will) and no more 500 error.

Hope this could help

I am having some problems activating the WPG2 plugin for wordpress, and during the process I copied the .htaccess file to run the little php5 test. In doing so, I noticed that i denied access to that directory. After removing the code with regards to the gallery and simply leaving the lines for the php test, provided me with access to the directory. But this shows me that this could be the reason I can't validate the plugin. can anyone here explain the following .htaccess code:

DirectoryIndex .htaccess
SetHandler Gallery_Security_Do_Not_Remove
Options None
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine off
</IfModule>
Order allow,deny
Deny from all

I have posted this already but for anyone following this thread the last line -> Deny from all will deny access to the directory, (the directory the .htaccess is located in)

Basically this .htaccess should only be in your g2data directory.

Did anyone get the error again today? My site was working fine, I made one post, and now I get the 500 error. Disabling WPG2 once again fixes it, so I know that's the problem. My standalone Gallery2 works fine.

This really sucks because I already have the .htaccess file with the PHP5 lines in it. That fixed it the first time, so I don't know what to do now.

My problem sounds similar to what so many have experienced here.

site address www.wishingrock.us

I have 1and1.com (hosting)
I have wordpress v 2.5.1
I have gallery v 2.2 (works fine standalone http://www.wishingrock.us/gallery2/main.php)
I installed WPG2 v 3.0.6

In the plugin config everything is green
WPG2 Validation Check: Valid (Help)

2. URI to Gallery2 Ok? - [Success]
3. Gallery2 can be located in G2 File Path? - [Success]
4. Gallery2 can be initialised? - [Success]
5. Gallery2 Version Compatible? - [Success]
6. Gallery2 Module: ImageBlock Active? - [Success]
7. Gallery2 Module: ImageBlock Version Compatible? - [Success]

9. Gallery2 to WPG2 Relative Path Validate? - [Success]

2. WPG2 Gallery2 Rewrites Status? - [Off]
3. Embedded Page is using what Header type? - [Simple]
4. Embedded Page is using what Footer type? - [Simple]
5. Using Which WPG2 Stylesheet? - [Internal]

I activate the plugin, navigate to my main page, click the WPG2 link @ the bottom of my pages and receive "Sorry.. WPG2 Page can not be displayed until WPG2 Plugin has been Validated."

If I click the View WPG2 Output Page>> hyperlink (located in the WPG2 setup next to the header that reads "WPG2 Page Generation Rules:" I get "Error 500 - Internal server error An internal server error has occured! Please try again later."

I read the posts about php.ini and .htaccess, but I don't have either file in the main wordpress or the gallery2 directory.

Any suggestions for next steps? Sometimes, I return to the site and all my posts disappear and I can't login. I keep the site open in a separate browser so I can return and deactivate the plugin again if my posts disappear when I open a new browser (my blog is set as my home page).

So what are you waiting for? Usually Gallery when fully/properly installed will create/modify a .htaccess file in the web site root directory. If not, then at least toss the line(s) to stipulate PHP 5.x for the entire site.

Find the suggested .htaccess file entries here:
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/75506#comment-270361

Also, further tweak PHP settings with a php.ini file in the web site root directory.

Find my suggested php.ini file here:
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/68598#comment-265393

Then let us know one way or the other how your installation is running.

The 'Clear Cache' solution did the job for me too - thanks to all you guys for saving me a lot of wasted time trying to track this problem down! From an otherwise satisfied 1&1 customer and a very happy new Gallery2 user!

Today I reached the end of my installation of Gallery2 and the WPG2 plugin on one of my WordPress sites hosted by 1&1:

WordPress: 2.6
Gallery: 2.2.5
WPG2: 3.0.7

Generally, the installation has gone just fine. The solution for .htaccess enabled the WPG2 options pages. When I click the G2 icon in a Write Post page (which apparently calls up g2image.php), I receive Error 500. I have created the suggested php.ini file in the site's root and cleared the cache to no avail.

What other information can I provide that would be helpful?

Now ... I just noticed that if I'm logged in to the site, I also get Error 500 when I click the Visit Site link. Has the .htaccess modification opened one door and closed another?

dfliddle: Did you specify PHP5 as the default version of PHP? That is also key to success running at 1&1. PHP.INI + .htaccess to specify PHP5.

The .htaccess suggestion was posted here:

I think that I have narrowed down my problem a bit. I had the AskApache Password Protect plugin installed and activated on my site. I believe that one or more of the activated security modules were interfering with the function of Gallery and WPG2. It's very time-consuming to troubleshoot the many modules one at the time, so for now the plugin is deactivated. There's only the basic .htaccess file (configured to specify PHP5) in place at the site root, the Gallery root, the G2 data folder, and in /wp-admin. Under these circumstances, cursory testing indicates that more works now (e.g. the WG2 button in the New Post page). However, I still can't be logged in and view the site, nor can I change the name -- apparently -- of the Gallery page.

If anyone else uses AA PassPro or another security plugin to harden their site, I'd be interested in reading about how it can be made to play well.

Thanks!

Since my post above, I have ensured that I have both .htaccess and php.ini in my web root (../htdocs/) and in the WPG2 plugin directory, as well as in the locations mentioned earlier. Five directories, total. Now it looks like I'm not having any problems at all. So the question now is ... do you think that I have these files in more places than I need? Should I care?

dfliddle: Odd that you would need those files in any directories other than the root of the web site. I guess do not argue with success, and make a note of how you got it working so if it ever breaks again... ;-)

Greetings,
I'm hosted with 1 and 1, and to date have been quite satisfied overall. I'm running into 500 errors when I try to generate the thumbnails. Either when I try to upload a number of greater than 50 or so images using any plugin whether it is Picasa2 Exports or From Local/Server, I get the 500 error after a bit and then I have no option other than to manually delete out the added gallery information/data via FTP. I get the same 500 error if when I upload, I decide not to generate the thumbnails and try to do it in the album edit screen or maintenance. I'm making the assumption that it has something to do with processing time and thresholds from 1and1 but really want to rule that out first. I would rather not have to switch hosts but may be looking at no other option.

On that note, are there any recommendations, current ones (I've looked at the ones listed earlier in the forums but it looks as though the list might not be overly current), for a good host that will handle a decent size gallery (I'm using it for hosting my wife's photography albums)

Thanks!
Mike

I also have the issue with getting error 500s when trying to access Plugins. The clear cache thing seemed to be working for a while, but then it stopped working. I have narrowed the issue down on my machine to a file called module.inc in my modules/flashvideo folder. If I delete the file, I can access Plugins. If I restore the file I get Error 500....reproduceable 100% of the time.

Hope someone can fix it because of course I'd like to use the flashvideo plugin, but I cannot activate it.

Matt

I'm with 1&1 in the UK and had just discovered the 500 error on trying to access the plugins in site admin after a year of the site running glitch-free. I've just done the .htaccess code addition to map all to php5 and it worked first time. phpInfo now showing that server is running php 5.2.6 rather than 4.9.x.

Well, I've come to no conclusions that are 100%, however, I'm not in the position as of yet that I want to switch from 1&1, I'm more than satisfied with the exception of this issue.

I have somewhat come up with a workaround that works for me and my site intentions. I host 2 photography websites and essentially the idea is to upload the pictures so that clients are able to browse and purchase them. In these instances, I don't need to full size files that are 1MB-2MB or more. So I batched them through a program I have to resize them, using Google's Picasa works as well, say down to a resolution that is suitable for web viewing but one that would prove too low for duplication of the images illegally. What I do then is upload them to a folder, one that is specific to uploading and Gallery2. I then use the From Local Server option for adding photos to the gallery, watermark them on the way in, and it works quite well.

So, if you don't absolutely need the huge original files, this might work for you. I know what we are all running into is the fact that the php.ini or htaccess files on our webhosts are set in a manner that prevents one user from hogging the entire cpu and processing speed. I guess I have to compromise somewhere to account for the good price and for me this isn't much of a compromise as I think it probably works better and is safer for my uses.

Hope this helps!

Once again, the fix above worked perfectly for my latest problem displaying the plugins page - exactly the same issue after updating to 2.3 as I had with the 2.1 update. I wonder why this maintenance page is hidden and the Cache options not available on the Maintenance page?

Thanks again for a great logical fix though!

What is the "it" that you tried?

Do you have PHP5 enabled?
Do you have a PHP.INI in every directory that has a .PHP file? (Or better yet, symlinks all pointed back at the one in the .../www dir)

Those are both needed to get Gallery running properly at 1&1.

I don't think that's the case - all php access to Gallery is via main.php, everything else is included via php includes, so that's the only file that's executed ab-initio.

Maybe so. I support several PHP apps at 1&1. Some did not pick up the PHP memory limit per my custom php.ini in the webroot, so that is when I came up with the script to search for .php files, and make sure that each dir that has a .php file has a symlink back to the webroot via ../../ syntax.

So now I just run that script any time I install a new piece of software, and if there is a new dir with a .php file in it, it makes the symlink.

Oh, there is that admin page... I remember now. That page used to not show the correct PHP settings. Now that I put symlinks, the Gallery admin page shows the correct settings. By "Gallery admin page" I mean:

SO I have been having this same issue. I lucked out and got a really nice lady from 1and1 tech support. I had her login to my admin screen and take a look at the issues I was having when I clicked on the plugin section of my gallery. She told me that I was having a memory issue and said she would fix it for me and then tell me how to fix it in the future if I ever had the same issue.

Dear Norm Walker,

Thank you for contacting us.

To set the memory limit on your current package, please follow the steps
below.

1. Open a notepad
2. Paste in the code ---> memory_limit = 40M
3. Save the file as php.ini and upload it inside the 'gallery' folder.
4. Check your URL again and it should work properly.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

FWIW, the PHP.INI file I arrived at does not specify a memory limit, however it is raising the memory limit at 1&1 (on shared Linux hosting) to 128M. "Don't ask, don't tell!"
