Best format for frames

I wanted to make a few new image frames, and wanted to know whats the best format (gif etc) to create transparant images for compatability. |

.gif only has transparency of color. So the background color has to be the same as the transparency color.
.png on the other hand has true transparency. So png is the way to go for frames that would look good on differing backgrounds.
