Advice - Upgrade or a new install?

Just looking for some advice here. I currently have 2.1.2 installed and have several thousand photos totaling over 3 GB in size.

The current install does work and is very high traffic, resulting in a large percentage of my income, so it's important that I don't blow it up and lose anything.

So which would be my best option - to try to update that install to the latest version? Or to start a new install and have 2008 photos start in the new install?

I tried to use Fantastico to do an upgrade, and after 6 hours it still had not finished, so now we are restoring the backup that we did beforehand, to at least get back to where we were.

Thank you for any advice on this.

1. create a full backup.
2. since it's important to you, backup regularly. it can be a problem with the server's hardware, with gallery or some other software, but desasters can happen any time. so don't be sorry and backup regularly.

once you have created a backup, try to upgrade.

if it's an important site, i'd copy the backup to another server and do a "dry run" there. upgrade your copy of your site (e.g. on your desktop computer) and see if everything works as expected.
if so, upgrade your public site too.

i wouldn't use fantastico. fantastico is a nice tool for first time installs. but fantastico doesn't seem to be good when it comes to providing new versions, security fixes. i'd use the official release of g2 directly.

@6 hours:
maybe your server is a bit slow? :) not sure why it would take that long.
at what point did it spend so much time?

you could copy your site to your own desktop computer or to a faster server, do the backup there and copy it back.
