Automated album creation?

I have an existing directory structure with hundred of folders each with between 10 and a few hundred photos that I'd love to get onto my gallery site. However, the process of manually making albums out of them is boring and time consuming. Is there a way (I'm not picky about album names, but something related to the directory name would be nice) to automatically generate the albums from my directory of files?

If so, can someone point me to the documentation for that feature or extension?

Thanks for the help. Do you have any insight into why that only seems to work on a few albums? If I try to have it do this with my entire collection I get a Server 500 error.
