Beckett, I have several albums. Two of my nested albums one night just disappeared. It shows the album exists, just with no photos. If I log onto the server I can see the photos are still there in their appropriate directories. Do you know how I might be able to get them to show up again? and do you know what might have caused this? The month of May gallery had photos in it and as you can see it is empty now. The wedding album had 271 photos in it and was also working absolutely fine. Thanks for your help. |

TADesigns, I split this off from the topic you posted it on, since it's unrelated.
Try upgrading to Gallery 1.3.4, as we have made some fixes in the code that may resolve this problem for you. Report back if that doesn't fix it.

It did not correct anything on the first one.
The reason I had posted on the end of the other thread is because beckett had mention that maybe the photos.dat or album.dat might have been corrupt. So I'm not sure if I maight have had the same problem. Its very weird because one minute they were there and all i did was hit back on my browser and then they disappeared.

TADesigns, I'm sorry to say that after looking at your "May 2003" album, it appears to be corrupted. We store the album data in a file called "album.dat" in the albums/album18 directory. We store data about all the photos in a file called "photos.dat". The photos.dat file appears to be cut short, same as the photos.dat.bak file.
There's a bug in Gallery up to and including v1.3.4 where if you run over your disk quota it can truncate your .dat files and also hose your backups. This has been fixed in the latest 1.3.5 snapshots (which you can download from the "bleeding edge" section of the downloads page) but it's probably too late for those two albums unless you have backups.
The images are all still there, just the caption and comment information is gone. To recover the images, create a new album and then use the "upload from URL" option and enter this URL: "http://www.thomasanastasia.com/alexandra/images/albums/album18" . Note: right now you have directory indexes turned off in your albums directory; turn them on temporarily for this operation so that the webserver gives Gallery a list of all the images in the directory, then turn it off again when you're done.

The URL you should be using is http://www.thomasanastasia.com/alexandra/images/albums/album02/
however, if you visit it, you will see that directory listing is disabled. You will have to enable it (so when you visit that url you see a list of files) for this fix to work.

How exactly do I enable the directory listing? I do not see that in the configuration screens.

The reason the URL above was different is because I have this issue in two different galleries. Bharat said that he thought the dat files were corrupted because i ran out of disk space. He was right I was maxed out again!!! so I finally put all of my sites on a dedicated server. I now have 30gb of space, which will last me for a very very long time. :D So are you saying that once the directory listing is enabled the URL's will work fine?

Create the .htaccess file with the command "Options +Indexes" and place it in the albums dir? gallery dir?

I finally got it to give me something other than an error.

But now it seems to be sitting there. Should it sit here a particular length of time depending on how many pictures were in the album? The one i'm trying to fix had 270 in it.

OK, well I have tried it several times and I get the same parsing message but the donwload box cloases and the screnn refreshes like it is done so I'm sure it isn't working. Should I delete all ofthe dat files and thumbnails in the old album dir?

Now I tried the same thing in my other gallery that had some corrupted albums. This time it does bring up the list of files to choose from.
The first time i selected everything and I recievd the could not open url error. The second time i just selected the original jpg, thinking maybe it would recreate the thumbnail and resized images. This is what I recieved.

When I try to open a random image (http://www.thomasanastasia.com/alexandra/images/albums/DSC02759.jpg) i get a customized 404 error. File not found.
Is the url correct? And if i try to access http://www.thomasanastasia.com/alexandra/images/albums/ i get a permission denied error. Try deleting the .htaccess file in the albums dir, and try again.

I will go in and delete the file and try again. In the mean time I did waht you tried on the other gallery I have the same issue with and it show the ablbum dir (http://www.thomasanastasia.com/family/images/albums/)
I will let you know what the results are after I delete the .htaccess file

I deleted the .htaccess file in /alexandra/images/albums/album18 and it could not open URL. So I put it back in and it gave me the option to select the files to add. I selected all and this is what I get.

Yes, it seems that is a bug. I added that last slash and it worked. The only thing is I would clarify to others to only select the original image file. If you use the default select all it recreates a thumbnail and resized image for every file. So you can potentialy have a gallery with three of every image.
So not that this is going to surprise you. But I still have an issue. I had the sme problem in two galleries on the same site. The album in the alexandra gallery is now fixed. In my family gallery I had an album with 270 pictures from a wedding that also got corrupted when the server ran out of space. The problem is when I try to reload the photos using the same technique as the alexandra gallery, it shows the uplaod ing box and says...

in the background. Then it closes the uploading files box and the gallery screen flshes like it should have updated and the Processing and Saving box just sits there stagnant. It never brings up a list of photo's to shoose from. Is there an issue with the amount of files that it can parse? Could it be that 270 x original image x resized image x thumbnail are too much?
Your thoughts as always are appreciated.

Well..... I went to the album directory and deleted every file other than the original jpegs and it pulled up the list giving me the optionto choose which pictures to add. So I believe it had an issue with the amount of files.
So both of my galleries are fixed and I am now on my own server with 30gb of space. Hopefully I will be without issues for quite some time.
