I would agree with the article and say it needs to be a balance. That said software to be installed in a bunch of different environments and that ads complexity.

Some users want and request more features, other don't.
Take the popular X_treme & PG themes for example. A very popular theme and it is feature/config overload.
Some users love this and other find it too complex. The users that like it request even more complexity.
So it is up to the users as well as the developers to say "halt". But as you know, the users only say "why has not this been added?"
So this becomes a balance as well. A complex balancing act. If you don't add the features the users will go sompelace else, add too many and they will leave as well.

G2 is modular so you can add the feature you like and don't use the features you don't.

With G2 living in a complex hosting environment it is complex.
Moving to PHP5 only, will make it a bit better ( smaller and faster ).
If all servers ran the same software ( OS, PHP version, memory, etc ) it would be a lot simpler as well, but that will not happen.
