I'm new to this and was wondering if there was a way to point the Gallery 2 software to a local drive on the same server which contains all of my photos in their own directories? Will it just go through them all and create libraries/galleries along with thumbnails per specs I set ahead of time? Then does it have a feature to dynamically update as I add more pictures to the directory? What I'm trying to find out is whether or not it is going to just make a copy of all my pictures and place them somewhere else on the Server when all I need is for the server to display them and create thumbnails based on a partition I've already created and organized and currently share my pictures from internally as well for my Media Center. If there is a specific name for this kind of setup could someone please tell me what it is so I don't have to give this long winded explanation. Thanks everyone...I hope this made sense!

afaik, G2 will always replicate items into ~/g2data/albums/ and when using the "From Local Server" option in Edit Album > Add Items - it can recursively fetch items and replicate the directory structure as albums. are you planning to run Gallery 2 on a Windows machine?

Not sure if I understand what you mean...sorry I'm a newbie here. Maybe it would be better for me just to tell you what I've got and what I'm trying to accomplish...
I've got:
Windows 2003 Enterprise Server w/ a 2tb Raid 10 Array with pics in one of the Shared Folder w/ many subfolders of pics. I also have other Shared Folders containing videos. This, for all intents and purposes, is my file server.
What I'm trying to accomplish:
Well I want to be able to share my pictures from this server over the web. Maybe even some videos. I've looked at about 1000 different product options and I've realized I don't need anything too fancy. The features I'm looking for is a program that I can just tell where my current picture file structure is and it will sort through it, make thumbnails...etc. I don't really want it to create a whole new file structure for my pics as this could take days and then it would double the amount of pics I have until I remove the ones it loaded to the site. I hope that makes sense.
I would like to have control over who can download the pics and I'd like the persons who do download to be able to select multiple pics and download them as a zipped file. I also like to be able to e-mail pictures and such via the interface.
An example of something I liked was the Absolute Image Gallery XE, but what turned me off to that was the price, but I liked a lot of its features. It was only lacking a Zip File function. I hope that makes more sense...Maybe Gallery won't do it...I don't know...maybe another product is fit for me....You guys are the experts so I'm hoping you have some thoughts. Thanks again!
