Hi,

I searched the forum but searching for "photo" and "link" is really not a good idea. I remember I could create links in my gallery, but somehow I do not know how to do it anymore. I searched the admin pages, the security pages, the theme configuration, but nothing.

To avoid misundertanding here is exactly what I am searchin for:

I have a set of albmus only viewable to the "circle of trust". sometimes I whant to have one of those pictures in my blog, so I whant to have a cheap copy / symbolic link from this picture to a "public viewable, maybe hidden" album. I have done it several times in the past, but some time of inactivity and some upgrades made me forget it.

pls help.

brgds

in g2.0, there was a feature called "create link"
in g2.2 this is called "create replica" and you need to install the "replica" module to enable it.

Hi Valiant

As nobody wants to thank you here, I do it ;-)

I personally think, it is never a good idea to change the name of such a module. It causes confusion. I was searching my site, my brain (whats left of it) and menalto but couldn`t make out, how I did it. Your answer say it. Bu why changing the name of the module?

Anyway, you saved my day. Thanks.

I believe the name was changed because it was titled in-accurately? It might also have gained some features or some backend functionality that made the title even more inappropriate.

I can follow your thoughts. But on the other hand, the orginal name just expressed what the module actualy does, create links to other albums or pictures. It does definately not create replicas. As far as I know, a replica is an exact copie of something, but not a link. Thats probably why I, as well as papick, had even installed the module replica, but never came across the idea of using it, because I do not want file copied but linked.

Anyway, I think one should avoid changing names generally. It is often hard enought to keep up with all the new applications spreading the market. To keep something simple and be continous makes a brand realy great.

o.k. enough talking. Gallery2 is great as it is and I am very happy it exists :-)

Hi,

yes, I am sorry, many thanks. Your posting helped me a lot, I spent a lot of time searching...

I agree the name is misleading. My topic name is misleading to. "photo link" is a bad name, but I think that soft link or cheap copy won't be understood by too many people.

I think the problem is thusly:

A "link" implies to me that all of the items are linked. In our case, they are kind of not. The only thing "shared" between them is the actual image. All the meta-data is unique between all the copies. So they are almost exactly copies, but they simply share the same *source* image to save space. They also have their own unique resize/thumb if needed (for example, if the album has different thumb/resize size I think?). So they aren't exactly copies and they aren't exactly links... they are replicas.

There *is* a "link" type item, and it is literally a link to another "something" that you can put your own thumbnail on. I use it to link to another person's gallery, but it could easily link to a website, your G2's tag cloud, what ever.

Changing names is tough, but if you don't do it... *new* users will be even more confused by the stupidly named module/feature.
