adding items to gallery from folder automatically

I would like to add items to the gallery by having it "watch" a folder for updates, and import them, like many photo programs do.

I keep a collection of photos on my main computer, and organize them into albums/subs by folder structure with picasa. Ideally, I would like to sync that folder over my network to a directory on the server hosting g2, and have g2 update itself as needed.

I've tried the "add items from local server" option, and that's the idea - but it does not have the capability to check for new items, nor is it automatic. Has anyone tried this or developed a plugin? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

nope, there's no such module for g2 yet. but you're not the first to ask for it. there are 2, 3 related feature requests. see http://gallery.menalto.com/sfvote.

I'm glad that I'm not alone in that request, and that it's understood by the dev team. If I had any coding skills I'd help- but I'll be with the project anyway submitting bug info and such. Hopefully this will be added soon and I can get to using gallery2 much more!

Just a question, I was reading about g1 - is that going to work for what I need because it isn't database-run?

no, in g1 you need to add items through a web GUI as well.

I've a local folder where new nested folders are created over days. Using the "From Local Server" option will always result in duplicated albums being created, instead of just appending to the existing albums. Is this problem/feature related to what is being discussed here?

I'm running version 2.2.2, does upgrading to the nightly built version 2.3 help in my case?

I checked issue 1241344 and don't see any progress. Is this feature still not available? I voted for it too.

These days, many users have thousands of photos. It is impossible to manage these photos with web albums without this sync feature. I voted for this feature as well, but haven't seen any progress. Picasa does this really well, and I love it!

Apparently this feature is not being considered for Gallery 3 (See here: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Features ) and
thats quite unfortunate.

This feature would go a long way towards making the product "idiot-proof".
